Why Rolls-Royce drives the way it does
Rolls-Royce is the only manufacturer on this site whose engineering target is the absence of sensation. The 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged V12 in the Cullinan is not tuned for a power figure or a soundtrack; it is tuned so that the torque arrives instantly and continuously at any speed, in any gear, without the driver ever being aware of a gearchange or a turbo spooling. The company famously describes its output as 'adequate'. The engineering underneath that joke is extraordinary.
The technical highlight is the suspension. The Cullinan uses a self-levelling air system with continuously variable dampers and a forward-facing camera that reads the road surface ahead and pre-adjusts the springs before the wheel reaches the imperfection. Rolls-Royce calls the result the Magic Carpet Ride, which sounds like marketing until you take one over a patched section of Jalan Cheras and register that you did not feel it. The aluminium spaceframe underneath is stiff enough that the body contributes nothing to the noise, and the cabin carries over a hundred kilograms of acoustic insulation.
In Kuala Lumpur the Cullinan does a specific job better than anything else: it makes traffic irrelevant. A car that isolates you this completely turns a forty-minute crawl from KLCC to Damansara into a non-event. It also has the ground clearance to deal with any ramp, hump or flooded underpass in the city, coach doors that make arrival at a hotel driveway genuinely theatrical, and rear seats that are better than most business-class cabins.
It is the least enthusiast car on an enthusiast site and it earns its place honestly. Some occasions are not about driving, and when they are not, this is the correct tool. It is also the most requested chauffeured vehicle we hold, which tells you exactly what people actually use it for.

Can I self-drive a Rolls-Royce Cullinan?+
Yes, subject to the top-tier deposit and driver criteria. Most clients take it chauffeured, which removes the deposit hold entirely and is generally the more sensible arrangement for the occasions it suits.
Why is the Cullinan so much more expensive per day than other SUVs?+
Replacement cost, insurance and the fact that a single wheel or panel costs more than a week's rental on most of the fleet. The daily rate reflects the risk we carry, and we would rather state that plainly than dress it up.
