Why Mercedes drives the way it does
Mercedes-Benz has a claim no other manufacturer can make: Karl Benz's 1886 Patent-Motorwagen is the first automobile, full stop. That heritage produces a very specific engineering temperament — a preference for isolation over immediacy, for structural rigidity over lightness, and for making a car feel expensive at low speed over exciting at high speed. Whether that appeals depends entirely on what you want from a drive.
For Kuala Lumpur it appeals a great deal. The C-Class and A-Class saloons we hold are exactly the right tool for the environment: quiet, well damped over the trenched and patched suburban surfaces that dominate Puchong and Cheras, equipped with automatic gearboxes calibrated to be imperceptible in stop-start traffic, and fitted with air conditioning systems engineered for markets far harsher than this one. A C300 will do a week of Klang Valley driving without ever being tiring, which is more than can be said for most of the interesting cars on this site.
The engineering under the skin is more serious than the badge-conscious assume. The current four-cylinder turbo units use a twin-scroll turbine with a low-inertia rotor to reduce lag, the nine-speed automatic has enough ratios to keep the engine in its narrow efficiency band at every speed, and the multilink rear suspension geometry is descended from a lineage that goes back to the W201. It is not thrilling. It is extremely, deliberately competent, and after a day of Kuala Lumpur traffic that is a real virtue.
The right way to think about a Mercedes rental here is as the car you take when the driving is the means and not the end — airport runs, a week of client meetings, a long trip up the North–South Expressway where you would rather arrive fresh than arrive exhilarated. If you want the same brand with the volume turned up, that is what the AMG models exist for, and they are on this site too.

† RM / bhp is the daily self-drive rate divided by the manufacturer’s brake horsepower, to one decimal. It is a blunt instrument — it ignores tyre width, kerb weight and where the torque actually lives — and it is still the fastest way to see what a badge is charging you. Power bars are scaled against 255 bhp.
Questions

C300 or C250 — is the difference worth it?+
The C300 has more power and a slightly firmer chassis calibration; the C250 is marginally softer and cheaper per day. For pure Klang Valley use the C250 is enough. For regular expressway running, take the C300.
Is a Mercedes saloon a boring choice for a week in KL?+
It is the unexciting choice and often the correct one. If you are driving daily in traffic, the isolation, the seats and the gearbox calibration will matter far more to your week than a 0–100 figure you will use twice.
