How it works

The detail

Most of the celebration bookings we take are for someone who has wanted a specific car since they were about twelve. That changes how we run the handover. Instead of the standard fifteen-minute walkaround, we spend half an hour: what the engine actually is and why it sounds like that, where the drive-mode selector lives and what each setting really changes, how the nose lift works, what the paddles will and will not let you do, and — importantly — the honest speech about the first twenty minutes being the most dangerous, in an unfamiliar car, on adrenaline, in front of an audience.

Short blocks work better than full days for this. A four-hour or six-hour window is usually plenty to do a drive, take the photographs, give three people a passenger ride and get dinner, and it keeps the cost proportionate to what is actually a two-hour experience. If the plan is a surprise, we will meet you somewhere off-site, hold the car until you signal, and bring it round at the moment you want it — that works particularly well in a hotel driveway or outside a restaurant with a forecourt.

Choose the car for the person, not for the price list. Someone who grew up on Gran Turismo wants the GT-R and will be genuinely more moved by it than by something twice the money. Someone who has always wanted the noise wants the Aventador S with its atmospheric V12, because nothing turbocharged makes that sound. Someone who wants open air on a warm evening wants the Huracán Spyder or the 718 Spyder. We are happy to talk it through instead of pointing you at whatever has the biggest number attached.

The requirements do not bend for a birthday, and it is better to know now: the named driver must be at least 23 for the sports and supercar tiers, hold a licence that has been valid for two years or more, and the deposit hold is the same as any other rental. If the birthday person does not qualify, book them as a passenger and put a chauffeur on it — plenty of people do, and it is a considerably more relaxing evening for everyone involved.

RM / bhp is the daily self-drive rate divided by the manufacturer’s brake horsepower, to one decimal. It is a blunt instrument — it ignores tyre width, kerb weight and where the torque actually lives — and it is still the fastest way to see what a badge is charging you. Power bars are scaled against 740 bhp.

Asked and answered

Can we decorate the car for a birthday?+

Ribbon on the mirrors and a bow on the roof are fine and we will fit them for you. Nothing adhesive, nothing on the paint, and no confetti inside — the interior valet on a supercar is not a quick job.

The birthday person is 21. Can they drive?+

Not on the sports or supercar tiers, which need 23 and two years of licence history. They can drive several cars on the entry tier, or you can book a chauffeur and let them enjoy the passenger seat properly.
