Ampang & Ukay

Ampang is the only part of central Kuala Lumpur where the topography does you a favour. The climb from Jalan Ampang up through Ampang Hilir and out towards Ukay Perdana and Bukit Antarabangsa is a real hill road — proper elevation change, second and third gear corners, tightening radii, and cambers that reward a car with well-controlled body roll. It is residential, so it is not a place to be loud or fast, but it is a place where a good chassis is genuinely enjoyable at forty kilometres an hour.

The embassy belt along Jalan Ampang and Jalan U-Thant is the quiet counterpoint: wide, tree-lined, low-traffic and heavily secured, which makes it an easy area to deliver into and a pleasant one to potter through. Delivery to the condominiums in Ampang Hilir is straightforward with a visitor pass; the gated communities up in Ukay want the resident to call the guardhouse ahead, which we will remind you about the day before.

The strategic reason to base a driving weekend in Ampang is the MRR2. From here you are ten minutes from the Gombak toll and the start of the Karak Highway, which makes Ampang the fastest launch point in the city for the Genting climb or the run over to Bentong. Leave at 06:30, be at the Genting base by 07:20, do the climb before the coaches wake up, and be back for a late breakfast having had the best two hours of driving available within an hour of Kuala Lumpur.
