The Golf GTI is the original and the benchmark. In 1976 a small group of Volkswagen engineers built a fuel-injected Golf as an after-hours project without full management approval, and in doing so created an entire segment. Nearly fifty years later the formula is unchanged in essence: a practical hatchback body, a torquey four-cylinder driving the front wheels, a limited-slip differential, and a chassis calibrated to be enjoyable and never intimidating.

The engineering that matters most on a modern GTI is the front differential. The electronically controlled locking diff can shuffle torque across the front axle mid-corner, which converts what would otherwise be understeer into drive out of the corner. Combined with adaptive dampers and a well-judged electric steering rack, it produces a car that flatters an average driver and still rewards a good one — which is precisely what the original set out to do.

In Kuala Lumpur the GTI is the quietly correct answer to a lot of questions. It fits in any car park. It clears every speed hump without thought. It has a boot that takes four people's weekend bags. It rides well over the patched surfaces around Puchong and Cheras. And on a road like the Ulu Yam loop, where the corners are second and third gear and the surface is imperfect, a light front-drive hatch with a good diff is genuinely a faster and less stressful proposition than something with 600 horsepower and 20-inch wheels.

It is also the cheapest way on this site to experience a properly engineered driver's car and not merely a fast one.
